Handbook For Modern Life: Section XII: Toubleshooting

February 13, 2008

Sometimes things do not go quite the way we plan. You think you have the direction of your life mapped out and then all of a sudden something completely unexpected goes awry. Losing a job or having a long term relationship end unexpectedly can really throw your life into disarray, especially if you were anticipating a fruitful career or a fulfilling marriage.

When these things happen there is often not much you can do except try again. Look for a new job and/or hit the bar scene. In the case of consumer electronics the user handbook generally provides a troubleshooting section in case of an unanticipated “failure to perform”.  One wonders why there is no handbook for modern life. well, the answer is simply that a user handbook for life would be just as helpful as the user handbook for electronics that is to say, not very.

Consider the obvious advice provided in almost every user manual when the device will not power on at all … without fail the book asks “is the device plugged in?  When your brand new HD DVD or Blu-Ray player indicates that no disc is loaded, doesn’t the book always recommend that you “ensure that a compatible disc has been inserted into the player” ?

If there was a handbook for modern life, it might provide such useful advice as:

In the event that  your significant other is cheating, examine the following: Is unit plugged in (well and often)?

In the event of loss of employment, check that the employee meets the minimum system requirements of the employer.
