HD DVD: Hello My Name is BetaMax

If you recall the beginning of the high definition DVD format war, Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray were strong contenders. The interactive menus and special features available on HD DVD made that my format of choice and I was set to pick up a player. I didn’t really have the disposable income at the time so I never got around to it.

I guess in retrospect it is a good thing that I didn’t pick up anything with HD dvd support. I just have to wonder if this is going to be a repeat of the whole VHS vs BetaMax thing. You do know that Betamax was better right? I mean that it had superior video quality compared to VHS. One of the reasons that VHS ended up as the standard for video cassettes, was that it simply offered a larger capacity and Americans will choose quantity over quality any day. Not that it wasn’t an intelligent decision to make, after all having to swap cassettes in the middle of a movie would have been a real drag. Can you imagine a “please insert tape number 2” dialog popping up at the most climactic part of a movie?
