Greensburg, PA (journihilism.net)
an elderly woman lost control of her car in Greensburg, PA yesterday after colliding with a gaurdrail. No other vehicles were involved in the unusual accident and nobody was seriously injured.
It would appear that the woman struck the gaurdrail and came to rest in a patch of grass and mud. In a panic, the driver shifted her car into reverse and depressesd the accelerator. When the vehichle regained traction it launched with unexpected velocity. The car made a complete circle in reverse at times riding up onto the sidewalk in a residential area where a number of children play. Surprisingly the woman’s can managed to negotiate a narrow turn down a sidestreet before becoming trapped on a concrete barrier along the edge of a private driveway.
What’s interesting about this situation is that the drive didn’t collide with any other vehicles or guardrails while making an unintended u-turn at high speed while in reverse around a blind corner. All things considered it must have been her lucky day.
Maybe we should give some more thought to restricting driver’s licenses for senior citizens. From all outward appearances, this car accident happened because an elderly driver panicked after striking a guardrail and lost control of her car. While I am sure the AARP would take issue with the suggestion that senior citizens not be allowed to drive; the elderly often have difficulty operating motor vehicles. Is it too much to ask that these citizens be asked to take a license exam after a certain age? After all we expect young drivers to demonstrate their proficiency before allowing them to drive.
