Birthdays suck

in Words Mean Nothing

It just happens that today (November 17th) is my birthday. I’m 84 years old today … or at least I feel that old. I’ve managed to incur a lot of hardship without a commensurate amount of joy. I want to change that. I have some ability that remains unused in my daily job. I just need to find an opportunity to apply myself. In today’s economy that is a feat which is somewhat more difficult than it sounds.

I haven’t managed to achieve anything truly notable in my life and each year I suffer from some kind of depression. I’m not sure if the depression is due mostly to my sense of failure, or its just some plain vanilla seasonal depression which manifests as winter arrives. Perhaps the events of last year have added new weight to my winter woes.

So far, the number of people who have observed that today is in fact the anniversary of my delivery can easily be counted in binary. I wouldn’t care so much about that; I really wouldn’t, except that I am acquainted with a few people who have birthdays close to mine. I certainly haven’t forgotten them as we’ve mutually commented on how close on the calendar the dates of our birth happen to be. I even attended a birthday/Halloween party which was thrown for a co-worker of mine. Perhaps She will remember.

I’m not after gifts, that’s not the motive for my operandi. A modest iTunes gift card and a few cookies would however,  be a nice touch today.

I didn’t bring cookies, did the cheesecake suffice?

My worst birthday was one year in high school. No one said happy birthday, and I thought all day that it was because everyone was planning a surprise party.

There was no surprise party. :-/

My family, however, always remembers my birthday, and that’s enough for me. :) Plus, I try to make my birthday “my day” and plan something really fun that I normally wouldn’t take the time to do, even if it’s something small like getting a manicure.
